Now is the time to start planning for the next Tarawa Reunion in fabulous Las Vegas! You are cordially invited to attend the 2014 celebration which is scheduled for August 5-7 at Sam's Town and Casino.

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Rick Holly, Operation Specialist 3rd Class. I served on the USS Tarawa from PRECOMM to 1979.

In 2009, shortly after the Tarawa was decommissioned, my wife, Mary Lou, and I had the idea of starting a reunion for those who served on the ship. We thought that Las Vegas would be the perfect place to gather for this special event.

Mary Lou and I flew to Las Vegas to find a hotel and casino to host the first Tarawa reunion in 2010. We first checked with the MGM Grand. The cost for just the meeting room at the MGM Grand was $2000 a day. Ouch!

Mary Lou suggested we try Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall. Its staff was more than willing to honor veterans and make accommodations to host our 2010 reunion. We now had a hotel and casino!

I then built TarawaReunion.com website to get the word out to all Tarawa shipmates. Today, we also have Tarawa Forum, to share reunion news, sea stories, and more with all Tarawa shipmates.

Mary Lou and I plan and organize the Tarawa's biennial reunions to bring shipmates and their spouses together again after many years apart. There are many reunion organizers who plan reunions for profit, and that is okay. Who would want to work for free?  Well, Mary Lou and I do!  We plan, organize, and spend many hours working on the reunions for all Tarawa shipmates. If there are funds left over from the previous reunion, we deposit them in the reunion account for the next reunion. We never have and never will pay ourselves. We are Shipmate Driven.

In 2013, we contacted Sam's Town Hotel and Gambling Hall to finalize and sign the contracts for the 2014 reunion. The cost for the 2014 reunion is $200.00 per person.

Mary Lou and I are Shipmate Driven, and we hope you are driven to attend our next Tarawa Reunion in fabulous Las Vegas!

Agree with you David, is it August yet? And better yet, too bad we just can't have it be Aug 5-7 again and again, kinda like in Groundhog days.
