As all of you know, I got rid of all lurkers who did not post. I think we had around 500 members. The forum is closed for new members. However, how would all of you like it if we opened the forum to one new member per current member? You would invite one new member to join us. The number one rule would be they would have to post and not be lurkers. Just an idea. I am not sure there would be people interested in becoming members.

I think you should make a post on the Facebook page(s) about the benefits of being active on the forum.  Like the Sticker, email address and eventually the Hat.  Even mention the various contests we've had and the prizes that you gave out.

Then lower the boom and tell them that in order to participate, they have to request  access and need to make a minimum number of posts per month, or they will be dropped.

If you'll do that, I'll post a pic of me in my hat (all of us should).

I'd also make a pitch at the reunion (I'd help but I won't be there this year).

I was thinking about that the other day too.  I think we should open it up too. Just my .02 cents.

As far as lurkers, like I have said before, I work for the Navy at SPAWAR.  I oversee all Shore installations in the entire Pacific Region.  I have 2000+ installations going on per month.  I receive, answer, file (I can't delete any email) HUNDREDS of emails a day concerning each and every job (including SITREPS), not including 100-200 Naval Messages I have to read and file per day.  All electronically.  By the end of the day, the last thing I want to see is a computer.  But I have really tried to come on here and be active, but it is hard.  I'm working 2-3 man-years of work right now because Shore manning in the Division is not as important as Afloat manning. So that is even more stressful and exhausting.  Imagine working the Mid Watch, just to get off and work the Day watch.  And both are 12 hours long.

If we do this, I will give all current members moderator status. This will allow you access to a hidden forum where we can discuss ideas for the forum new members cannot see.

Rick, by chance did you save any of the user data before the forum was closed and purged?  If so, maybe sending a mass email to the former users...

Everyone has voted except our Gunny, Keith. (I did not vote. I wanted to see what everyone else was thinking.) It looks like all current voters have decided on "Open the forum for a month for new members, then close it." My next question is, and this is where I have an issue, I don't like lurkers. I think everyone should add something from time to time. Should there be a certain number of posts a member should be required to stay in the forum? Also, I will make all of your moderators so you can add, delete, move, and we can discuss certain topics we don't want other members to see in the private, cannot see by other members, forum. Also, I could just open the forum to visitors to read everything. Would there be problems if we were to do that?

I think there is a list of old members, but I don't want to email anyone and beg them to join. I think I banned the IPs of people who were lurkers. I may have to figure out how to undo the banning of IPs. I think it would be an easy assignment to perform.

I was thinking that they need to make 10 posts a month, to stay active.

10 is good.  I just hope I can keep up!  HAHAHA [smile]  Things are going to get really hard for me at work for a few months as I cover 2 uncovered desks (man-years) of work in addition to my own.

leo , i have no doubts you will be able to keep up...    i often find myself short for words or time ...   if we keep the riff raff out and the topics good, we should all have a easy time posting.

I don't want to talk about the forum at the reunion. We can figure it out after the reunion.

Okay guys, I have taken your suggestions. Tarawa Forum is open for the month of August. Please make sure the new members know the posting rules. No Lurkers. Let me know who wants to me a forum moderator. I will make you one.

Good [smile]  If you kept a list of the lurkers, I say SPAM them with a message saying the forum is open and invite them back.  IT could stir up some more interest in the 2018 Reunion.  Just keep in mind, some folks rather read, for a large number of reasons.

Steve, I understand what you are saying, but I want people who are willing to talk. It is just like going to a party. I would rather have people there talking instead of listening and not adding to the conversation.

Good news! Have you noticed John Green is our newest member! Let's hope Bennie Rice joins (from the reunion). He is a good guy.

Membership closes at the end of August.

Thank you. It has been one thing after another, family member dying, lost of beloved family pet, sick, etc. Hopefully, things will get back to normal, again.

We just got back to Ohio for Christmas from Florida. The day we left, it was 87F to Ohio's 10F with ice, no fun, ha.

It felt good reading the posts here after all the craziness going on in my life. Coming here is like being on Tarawa visiting with all of you. Relaxing.
