That things you remember being so big when you were young, you think are small now?

For example.  I was about 5, we lived in this older house that had 9' ceilings and windows that went from 2' off the floor almost to the ceiling.  To me, those walls and windows looked a mile high.  I'd love to have a place like that again.

I bet if we were to go on Tarawa again, we would think she is big just like the first day we saw her.

I'd been on carriers before the Big T, so it wasn't that big to me.  But, I know what you mean, first time I walked aboard the Coral Sea, I was amazed that something that big was afloat.  The next one was the America, CV-66.  It made the Coral Sea look like a shrimp boat.

When I first saw Tarawa, I said to myself I am in the real Navy and I thought wow Tarawa was huge, and has you all say it got smaller the more time I was on her, then I went to the Carl Vinson , now this was huge

New line...

Have you ever noticed...

How many people you find were in the navy and past crew members of one of your ships?

I was at Home Depot this morning picking up material for my basement project. I was wearing a vintage Tarawa hat from my last deployment in '83.

One of the sales associates says "I've seen that ship" - I asked him where and as it turns out, he made 3 deployments on the Peleliu.

When I first saw the ole girl they had her on the right side of the pier if you were walking down it. Had to walk by the Fox which I think was a FFG. As I got to the first Line I stoped and looked up. I said damn you a big SOB. O thought dads 91/2 johnson want push that. I got to the deck edge elev. and the Qtr. Deck at the hanger bay and was just in over my head. Country boy if this big sob breaks down I hate like hell to see the paddle cause I know they would put me on it.

I ran into a Tarawa sailor on the old Tarawa CV-40 in Walmart in The Villages, FL.

The Villages has the largest American Legion in the world. When I go back down, I'll stop in. There is a guy there that apparently has a list of all sailors and what ships they served upon. It could be a treasure trove!

Size is a bogus descriptor of things when they are paid for by blood of a veteran. There where several thousand Marines and Sailors killed in the Battle of Tarawa.

Keith just over 1000 marines were killed about 2500 wounded on tarawa. One ship sunk and about 700 navy Kia.but was one of the bloodiest for a 3 day period.
