I'd love to have a hat.  And a few of the hat "patches".  You know, like the one that is sewn on the Top Gun 1st Place gun pouch.  I really, Really, REALLY love it.  You would not believe the number of people who have come up and asked me about it while I was at the range.  Lots of Vets too!  Met a few friends along the way!! As for the Tarawa plank owner patches or variations there off, would be awesome. Reunion is almost here.

i should be playing more, but the temps have been in the 80's , just added a 12 x 23 addition to my deck... when the weather is nice i have a difficult time turning on the computer , usually the 5 minutes i plan on being online turns into 2 hours , then i kick myself in the ass for waisting my day away...     besides, im not great at this version..

I expect I will spend less time online as the summer progresses.  Today it's 46 and misty, so not doing anything outside.

Next week, I won't be on at all.  We're headed to Montana to see my son and family.

I just got the three hats out of the box. The hats were protected in a plastic bag inside the box. They look great. I will send them out this week. I will let you all know when they are in the mail. Thanks again for playing. I will have another contest on our forum for all of you to win more hats. I have over 100 of them. I promised myself I will give them all away, if possible. I WILL NOT SELL THEM. Thanks for being members of Tarawa Forum.

Thank you for your kind words. I did go around and around many months with the hat company. I did not like a lot of the test samples they made, and I did make several changes. I am quite sure the company was upset with me. However, in the end, the hats look very, very similar to the original plank owners' hat. I also have a box of rejects. I could offer them one day. You could wear them when you are cutting the grass, working on the farm, fishing, hunting, hiking, etc.

As long as they didn't misspell LHA-1 TARAWA, I'd love a reject.

I'd take a reject too, for daily wear, like at the Shooting Range, at the VFW, etc.

I got into my old Navy footlocker, hoping one of my old TARAWA hats was in there, but no such luck. I think the ex-idiot I was married to threw them away when we separated (I went on deployment).

They are very nice hat's.

However, my hat from '83 has LHA-1 under the eagle, which will be nice as I lose my memory... [smile]

I agree with the LHA1 on the bottom, but I was copying the original plank owner's hat.

They came out wonderful.  Over the years I was onboard, the hats changed quite a bit.  But the hat you worked on is really great.  Great job, Rick!

i love the hats and think they are wonderful..      when i was in my hat had the gold(yellow) eagle... we also had the brown and white eagle.    if i could change a thing, i would love to have one with a gold eagle....       but im working toward 1200 just so i can wear the second one...[smile]

I wonder what a gold eagle with the rest in silver look like? Maybe too much bling?

rick,
gotta say again i love the hat. You did a fantastic job of re-creating the plank owner hat . I think what each member (i know for myself) we want as close to the original as possible . you did exactly that with the plank owner hat...   I myself never had a silver eagle hat because i was not a plank owner....   i had the one pictured above...  guess its as close to getting "mine" back as possible...

there are some really cheap / just down right ugly hats out there that carry the tarawa name or logo.....    i wouldnt wear one of them on a bet...    my opinion says stick with original designs.    the hats you had made are fantastic- could almost call them NOS " new old stock"  and would probably sell all day - glad you are not selling them-  i agree that they need to be earned....

Leo , post that pic , id love to see it.

Thanks. I agree. I have an original plank owner's hat that has NEVER been worn, and the new ones look just like them.

This is the original plank owner's hat. The first Tarawa hat. REALLY! I have NEVER worn the hat. When I got it, I immediately sent it home to my father. He placed it in an old trunk. My sister found it a few years ago when she was clearing my parents' home to sell it. There are no wrinkles or dust on it. Maybe one day I will sell it on eBay.

Actually, the new hat is better looking than the original hat, hee, hee. The original hat's text and eagle are on a patch that is sewn on the hat. The new hat has the text and eagle sewn into the hat itself. (see pictures above) I think it is a cleaner look.

It is the downward angle when I took the picture that is causing it to look huge.

So for a Second or Third Generation of the TARAWA hat, take a look at my profile picture.  Not my Avatar. This was probably around 1983 or so, definitely on the last deployment I made on her, as I left in 1984.
