It is gorgeous. When I get the first 12, I will send one out to Roy Colon to compare. The new ones are being made now. The first ones will be destroyed. If Roy gives the approval it compares closely to the original patch, I will then place an order for a large quantity of them.

The threaded artwork on the new patch is better then the artwork on the original patch! Look at the wings.

Very cool. One question, there seems to be a difference in color, at least to the eyes of this ole Marine.

Keith, I think the difference in color has to do with lighting, the quality of the camera, and camera shuttle speed.

I got an email this afternoon informing me the NEW test USS Tarawa hat patch with an EAGLE using metallic thread has been shipped. USPS two day shipping is being used. So, I should get it Thursday or Friday at the latest. I'll give you an update, send one out to Roy, and wait for Roy to compare both of them. I hope Roy gives us a good report (crossing fingers)!

I am trying to upgrade the Tarawa ball cap with a modern, hip hat to go with the very cool plank owners patch we made for the forum. I guess I could go with the old style hat, but I think I would like to step out of the box with a twentieth-first century, American style hat. This is a two-tone navy/white hat. I'm still looking.

Well everybody, the verdict is in. The new patches look as if they came from the same batch as the ORIGINALS from the 70's. Color appears to be right on, and embroidery is a perfect match. See Ya'll in Vegas.

I just ordered three Navy blue hats of different materials to evaluate. When I get them, I will take a picture of them with the patch beside all three of them. (I will take the pictures outside to get as close to the color as I can. However, the color WILL CHANGE when you see it, because not all computer, smartphones, or tablets' screens can generate millions of colors. One man's blue is another man's coral.) At times I think the hat color and material should match, BUT at times I think how cool would it be to step outside of the box and have the plank owners patch on a modern baseball cap like in post #17 above or a totally different color or even a military patterned baseball cap. Does anyone have an opinion about it?

why not do both... i like the idea of a silver patch for plank owners, then yellow on blue, and then the red hats....   for all of us that tossed our hats , lost our hats, and never ever have a chance of getting "our hat back"  it would nice to be able to have options...  i am sure once they have the embrodery pattern , the eagle is simply a batch run with a different color thread.

my nephew just came home on leave and his issue hat from great lakes is one of the trucker hats , i dont like it at all,  i like the original ball caps ..... maybe i just dont like change ...   sticking as close to the original as possible ....

i think the silver eagle is cool, at the same time, i had never seen a silver one till now,  never liked the multi color eagle "brown and white" ,  it wasnt "my hat"...

your going above and beyond the call to re create a part of tarawa history . thanks again for all you do rick...

Is it too late for you to take a picture of your nephew's hat and posted it here? I'm trying to imagine a trucker's hat. I guess I could Google it. Be right back.

I'm back. Okay, I get it. A trucker's hat has a high profile in the front. UVA7, I agree with you. I do not like that look. Larry Osborn, I know you are a trucker. No offense, I don't like the look. UVA7, I'm not quite sure what you're saying about the different color threads. I did see a cool camouflage baseball cap, and thought how cool the silver eagle would be on it, especially for Marines, (like Keith and Kip)!

I just had an idea. (SHOCKING, ha-ha!) What if I get several volunteers to design their own personal Tarawa ball cap using the original plank owner silver eagle? I would send an original silver plank owners patch to the volunteers. I can give the volunteers a link to one hat company I found on the Internet for them to purchase their particular style ball cap. Of course, they can go anywhere to purchase their cool ball cap. If they have a Navy cap, they could also sew the new patch over the old patch on the hat. By the way, all patches come with an iron on glue on the back. I can get information on the proper way to iron them on from the company that designed the patches. Give me a moment. I have that information somewhere in my emails. This will be great for OS2 Roy Colon, who compared to the original patch with the new patch.

We could have a voting poll to determine the coolest plank owner patch hat on the forum!

I'll be back in a moment with more information.

Here are the iron-on instructions for the patch. I am thinking about having a lady who sews in my community sew one on to compare it versus ironing the patch on. I think both will look great.

YES, the hat patches can be put on anything with the low melt heat seal material that's on the back of the hat patches.
The way that I line up the hat patches to the hats is to fold the hat patch in half and hold it there with 2 or 3 spring clips on the fold. When folding the hat patch (hp) in half the back of the hp is exposed. The front of the hp is hidden. The fold is top to bottom only.
I used to use a metal coffee can with clips to hold the hat to the can. The coffee can had to be clamped to a table or work bench.
Set the iron to the highest setting. When hot, walk the iron over the hat to make as flat as possible.
You can use the towel here also. Before I forget - pick up a can of Textile Spry Adhesive at any fabric store.
Remove the spring clips from the hp before you spray the hp back (spray in a empty box to catch the over spray).
You spray the back of the hat patch lightly and the spray becomes tacky so that when you remove all the clips, you can align the fold of the hp to the seam of the hat (so long as the hat is a 6 panel hat) and press the hp down. Next you need to put a towel or old T-shirt on the hp and just walk the hot iron all around the hp. When you feel that you have walked the iron around enough, remove the towel and try to lift the hp very lightly at the ends. If the hp come up, then replace the towel and walk the iron around again.
NEVER put the hot iron directly on the hp without a towel to protect the metallic thread.
I never tried the front end of the ironing board. I do not think that you can get the hat flat enough on the end of the ironing board.
You need something to rap the hat around to hold the shape of the hat while applying the hat patch.
Hope that this helps you.

Here is a link to "a" baseball cap seller on the Internet. Of course, use any ball cap you want. If you scroll down the page you will see Baseball Cap Buying Guide. I think it could helpful for those who decide to design a hat with the original plank owner patch.

I think a two-toned hat with the patch would be cool. This is a Navy bream hat with white. I like the matching blue eyelets! The patch would STAND OUT in this hat design! Look at all of the two-tone offering they have here!

Okay, yesterday the UPS gal dropped off the first of two test hats. These hats are both Navy "blue". The one on the right has a higher front than the one on the left. I don't know which one I like better. Also, I am still thinking about the camouflage patterned hat. That just seems cool. I also like the idea of a two-toned hat.

I think the one on the right is more of a trucker's hat you were referring to in a previous post. Yep, I agree with you. The one on the left looks better than the one on the right.

The one on the left. We had those ugly ass trucker ones during '86-'89. I'm also not a fan of the two tone if you're going for an original look.

Do you like the camouflage look?

No, not so much. Camo is not Navy, NOW.......maybe a Navy digital pattern. I'd have to see it.

I see what you and UVA7 are talking about. The front is really tall. You could mount a coal miner's light in that HUGE space.

If anyone wants the new navy color hat on the right (without the patch), claim it here first on this thread. Warning, you will have enough space to mount a coal miner's light on it!

How much, is that two-tone? I might have my original patch sewn on it. Look at it, it's going to need the height. Lmao!

They added LHA-1 below the eagle.

Here is the link to the ball caps. The cost is $11.19.
