For Tarawa we had to contact the officer designated by the command that was handling the decom guests. As I remember we had to provide information about when we served aboard and personal info so we could be checked out. Some time later we received a packet with the formal invitation, which was the instrument that got you thought gate 9 (and only that gate... Decom was at pier 13, as I remember). Once you got on the base you were directed to a parking lot. Then when you got to the pier you had to again show the invitation to get onto the pier. Once you got that far you pretty much wre "free" to wander around the area of the ship and the areas open for guests on the "tour."

The "key" is the invitation to get on the base.

While it is sad to see the last of a great ship design being decommissioned, the issue here that makes our goal of getting the Tarawa so that we can create the first amphibious ship museum.

If you aren't getting involved to help raise the funds to have the Tarawa, you need to stop what you're doing and get involved. With the decommissioning of the Peleliu, the government could move quickly to scrap the Tarawa.

So if you love the Tarawa like most of us, contact Rick, Jimmy Sica or myself about what you can do to help.
