Reunions are about comradeship and seeing who can tell the best sea story. Reunions are known to have tours set up to various places of interest in the hosting city. They have events for the spouses or significant others so they don't feel left out. Finally they have a banquet with a guest speaker. The USS Tarawa reunions have those, we even have a reigning bowling champion. In 2014, the USS Tarawa is breaking new ground. We are going to be crowning the USS Tarawa's Top Gun. You read it right, we are going to crown the USS Tarawa's Top Gun. We are introducing both a rifle and pistol competition. The guys will compete against the guys and the gals against the gals. While some guys or gals haven't shot since their time in the service, while others have continued shooting weapons in one way or another. That being said, the plan will be for the pistol we will shoot either the M1911 (.45 acp) or the Glock 17 (9mm). The rifle will be either the AR-15 (.223/5.56) or the M1 Garand (.308 or 30-06). With planning for the competition still on going, the thoughts are that each winner will get the title of USS Tarawa Top Shot as well getting the chance to shoot one of the following: 1) a Thompson sub-machine gun, 2) an Israeli Uzi or 3) a SAW (squad automatic weapon) which is a light machine gun. While the format of the competition is still in the planning stages, we wanted to know if you would be interested is competing one day during the reunion. We would also like to know if you would compete in either rifle or pistol or both. There will be some cost per person, however, the more people that a) show interest in participating in the event and then b) that actually register for the reunion, the lower the cost will be. So after you read this, go enter your vote in the poll that is associated with this post, and post a reply with your thoughts and input so that we can make this an outstanding event for one and all.

Would like to use the M1911 and the M1 Garand. OK, OK I am an old crusty Marine. Will shoot whatever I am handed. My wife might be interested in shooting the pistol.

Lets get this match going, I am ready.

I will work with anyone long distance if you need some basic help getting ready, regardless if you own a weapon or not.

I voted for both, pistols and rifles. I have not shot either since leaving the Navy. I have found three local shooting ranges in my immediate area. I will go there for instruction and practice. What rifle and pistol do you recommend me using for my instruction? It would be nice to have the same ones as we will be using at The Gun Store in Las Vegas.

How many judges do we need to have for the competition? Of course, they would be able to participate in the contest, too. I'm thinking you, David, and a third person who is very familiar with shooting.
