I have been a life member for over four decades. At the ripe young age of 60+I have undertaken the goal of competitively shooting my M1 at distances from 300 to 1000 yards.

Would like to hear from others that are like minded.

1000 yards? How do you do that?

Given my eyes at this stage it will be with scope and either bipod or sandbags.. In the old days, part of our rifle qual in the Corps was at 500 yards.

The next match here in November, I hope to be shooting both the 600 and 1000 yard matches.

Back in the '60s we had a Marine sniper and member of the Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol team, who shot a 998 with standard iron sights. I believe that that record still stands to this day. In fact, prior to his setting the record of 998, two of his teammates also set the record only to have it fall later that day.

I have not held a gun since boot camp. I recently became a member of the NRA. I am interested in taking a gun safety course. Then a carry and conceal class. I would then like to find a sportsman club and start shooting. If anyone has any suggestions, I would welcome it.

There are normally various NRA based classes all over the country. There are also several local sporting/guns in every local area. We have two locally not including the base at 29 Palms.

A search of the web should give you instructors to contact for the classes you are looking for.

As for the concealed carry, your local police/sheriff's office will have the instructions and requirements you have to fulfill.

Not currently a member of NRA but have been definitely considering it. Your thoughts please. As far as shooting sports ,  I have always been a scatter gun guy (trap). With the apparent shortage of ammo now days how can you even find enough to shoot? Around here (NW Ohio) you can't even find rimfire cartridges. (22LR) for plinking.

Even here in southern California I feel your pain. I have found the following websites.

1). http://www.luckygunner.com - have purchased from them and am happy.
2). http://www.sgammo.com

Both have varying stock items, some in quantities of 1000.

If you shop there please post your thoughts and results.

Please remember that they expect you to know the laws of your particular state.

Roy, As I mentioned in a previous post, I had good luck in finding what I am looking for. In fact my last order had several 300+ round 22LR bricks. While the price is higher than even earlier this year. But I compare against several sources for the best price. I have noticed that in the last month or so that prices have gone up.

Just joined the NRA.  Yeah, I know, it's about time.  I do a lot of shooting - as you all know - and I talk a lot about shooting on Facebook, and at work.  Once upon a time I was the "go-to" guy about computers.  Now, I have co-workers coming and asking me questions about firearms and laws and stuff.  My latest was my computer tech who was asking if M1 Garands are legal in California.  We spent about 30 minutes talking about the law and classifications, but it ended with, if a gun store has them in stock or they can get one for you, it is legal.  I pointed him towards the CMP (and explained what they are all about) so he can try to get a used one for the historic aspect of it, but he preferred to get a new one.

I have recently paid off my endowment level membership. I would also recommend that you join your state level organizations, I have become a life member of CRPA and TSRA.
