For our resident teacher, Rick, how would you grade this student's work. Make sure you gave the correct instructions.

I would give the student a 100 on this test only if I did not address how to do alphabetical order on a group of words. I would make sure the student understands the proper way to group words in alphabetical order.

Grades are not important. Learning is. Doing whatever I can do to motivate a student to want to learn is the most important thing. It's not the grade, it's the student.

The student will learn how to order a series of letters in alphabetical order.

The student will learn how to order a series of words in alphabetical order.

Allen, above are two Language Arts (Reading) concepts. Both must be taught and tested. Clearly, the student was doing the first concept in the test. I would explain to him the difference of the two and allow him a second chance to show me he is proficient.

By encouraging students to want to learn, you create better lives and a positive classroom environment. I have always tried to dangle the carrot in front of my students.

Rick, first I would laugh. Then I would probably have to remind myself that this is probably the most literal thinking kid in the class. I certainly have spent my time with some literal thinkers. ;-)

Yep, I think you may be right. He could've been a first-year teacher.
