Peaceable Kingdom

Peaceable Kingdom, a series of 61 paintings by Edward Hicks started in 1820

Hicks' works display similarities from painting to painting. For example, his 1834 version of "Peaceable Kingdom" and 1845 version of "The Residence of David Twining" offer many comparisons (please see first two paintings displayed below). First, the right area of both paintings appears to be the most congested area, in which the size of each object seems to reflect its importance regardless of its position in space. Both paintings show humans and animals interacting together, and evoke a sense of community because the people are portrayed as trying to accomplish something. In the case of "Peaceable Kingdom", there are settlers in the background, signing a treaty with the Native Americans.

At the age of seven, he and his family moved to Oregon. After studying at the University of Oregon, he followed in his father's footsteps and became a dentist, graduating from North Pacific Dental College. From 1929 to 1937, he practiced oral surgery in Eugene, Oregon. He then moved his practice to Altadena, CA. There he joined the Pasadena Community Playhouse, eventually giving up dentistry at the age of 36 to become an actor. He made his film debut in 1939. His chubby face and gravelly voice were featured in over 100 films, but he is perhaps best known for TV roles in Judge Roy Bean (1956), Petticoat Junction (1963), and Cade's County (1971).

I will be leaving Florida for Ohio tomorrow. I will video the drawing sometime EARLY next week to see who gets the really cool Tarawa puzzle. Then we will start a VERY COOL 100 World Trivia Pictures Contest for an unbelievably COOL Navy prize. BUT before we do that, I have another cool prize to give away. Give me a few days to get myself organized.
