It’s always nice to be proven right.
And since responsible gun owners across the nation know they’re right when they stick to their guns (pun intended) about the role firearms play in reducing gun violence, second amendment supporters nationwide are feeling vindicated over the recent news out of Chicago.
Since concealed weapon permits were finally allowed in the state of Illinois at the beginning of 2014, crime is down significantly in the nation’s third-largest city.
According to The Washington Times:
Since Illinois started granting concealed carry permits this year, the number of robberies that have led to arrests in Chicago has declined 20 percent from last year, according to police department statistics. Reports of burglary and motor vehicle theft are down 20 percent and 26 percent, respectively. In the first quarter, the city’s homicide rate was at a 56-year low.
Pro-gun advocates have been arguing this point for years, especially in regards to Chicago.
Chicago still has some of the strictest gun laws on the books. And as such, Chicago also has one of the highest crime rates out of any urban-metro area in the entire United States.
But the recent news in overall reduction in both murder and crimes rates is encouraging. As Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said:
It isn’t any coincidence crime rates started to go down when concealed carry was permitted. Just the idea that the criminals don’t know who’s armed and who isn’t has a deterrence effect…The police department hasn’t changed a single tactic — they haven’t announced a shift in policy or of course — and yet you have these incredible numbers.
It’s a very inconvenient fact for liberals, to know beyond the shadow of a doubt that legal, responsbile gun ownership inhibits crime on such a level.
And if you ever want to sweep the legs out from underneath any liberal who gets in your face and says guns are evil, go ahead and give them this little stat.
The Crime Prevention Research Center found that the 147 increase in concealed firearm permits in the past 7 years has led to an overall reduction of murder and crimes rates by 22 percent. That’s a reduction of nearly one quarter in the overall violent crime rate.
It’s estimated that nearly 11.1 million Americans legally carry at the present time, whereas only 4.5 million carried back in 2007. Those numbers really do bolster the cause of second amendment freedoms.
And one thing you already know, that every gun owner should know, is weapons are always to be used as a last resort.
