While I haven't been in cold country for extended periods like the Great Lakes, but remember watching the Navy boot camp in San Diego from my side of the fence at MCRD San Diego.

Everything has changed since my day as well as yours. I was prepping for retirement in '88. The traditions that you and I knew from back then are all gone.

We are watching a slow destruction of tradition across the Naval Services.

I truly understand the trip down memory lane. MCRD San Diego had changed so much after I had been away for years, that it was hard to recognize. That doesn't mean that when you go to Great Lakes, that you won't be taken back. While the scenery has changed, the experiences you had there will be a common bond with your nephew that is beyond family.

I have found that many of my service friendships be they new or old are just as strong as family as they are developed and forged through service. I have found guys I have served with many times after 30+ years that are still there and strong as ever.

Go it is well worth the trip.
