Rick, you need to be more specific of the time period because the amount of designated spots increased from PRECOMM to DECOMM.

Maybe someone's light bulb turned on.

I'm thinking they figured out they were wasting valuable space on the flight deck after the early 80's

This is from Captain James "Jim" Ponzo, Flight Deck Officer on Tarawa during the early Tarawa days. Good luck with the clues!

Captain James "Jim" Ponzo said, "We had X spots but normally only used 7 as X spots were covered by the parked helos or the slash as we called it, one forward and one aft on the starboard side of the deck.

The question is how many total landing pad spots did Tarawa have?

The following shipmates have correctly answered TARAWA Trivial Question #8. I will place all names in a WWII ammunition box and select the winner. (See TARAWA Trivial Question #1 to watch the selection process.)

Please answer on Tarawa Forum by simply clicking on my name on the left side of the page and selecting email or PM. You must be a member of Tarawa Forum to play.

There are 8 Tarawa shipmate in the drawing for TARAWA Trivial Question #8. The contest ends JUNE 30, 2014 at midnight. Good Luck Shipmates!

TARAWA Title Level Notice: For those who CAN answer the first ten questions correctly, their names and avatar pictures will be listed for all to see on Tarawa Trivial Hall of Fame for years and years. They will advance from the entry title level of BOOT CAMP to the top title level of TARAWA! (Currently, there is only one shipmate with the title of TARAWA.) Plus there will be a SPECIAL ceremony for them at our August reunion in fabulous Las Vegas during our banquet program. (Note: They must be in attendance at the reunion to participate in the ceremony.)

John is correct. The landing pads were different from the early years of Tarawa to the late years of Tarawa. Both answers are correct!
