As sad and horrible it is to think one day Tarawa will become scrap metal, a reef somewhere in the ocean for aquatic animals, or on a happier note, a recommission back to service, there must be an end to Tarawa. With that said, Tarawa Forum is launching its BIGGEST contest to date. The prize will be the best ever offered on our forum. To enter, simply name the month and year Tarawa meets her demise. For example, August 2018. You cannot enter the same date of a member who posted before you. The contest closes on 1/1/2016.

Still don't think the America should be classified as an LHA - No well deck.  LPH maybe.

just looking over the status of the reserve fleet , nothing on the "t" has changed... but just for fun, if you were allowed to have a keep sake from the "t" what would it be?   a door, hatch, anything you could carry away in a truck. what would that item be?

I want the chunk of steal that the AIMD Battle "E" is painted on.  MY AIMD won the first one awarded to an LHA in '83.

I went through hell to pass those inspections.

U.S. Naval Amphibious Ship Historical Society
I wish to inform everyone that there is a situation brewing. Director NAVSEA Inactive Ships On-Site
Maintenance Office
93-051 Waipio Point Access Road
Waipahu, HI 96797-3272
Sir
I am requesting information regarding the USS TARAWA LHA1.
We , U. S. Naval Amphibious Ship Historical Society have been trying to get the ship on museum hold it has come to my attention that the USS TARAWA LHA 1 is planned to be in June of 2016 to be used as target practice and sunk. I would like to know any sort of confirmation on this the USS Tarawa LHA-1 . if this is so is there any way we could possibly be able to salvage anything for our museum aboard this ship before this becomes into fruition. I as the director is very saddened by this news the ship. She still has a lot of life left in the Eagle of the sea. according to many I've spoken with but I understand that the Navy has to do what it has to do under this administration for those reasons if you could please respond to me as quickly as possible I have my email here at : skipper.usnashs.org or by the returned address that you see above in this letter I will be very appreciative thank you many are wondering and they're looking to me for answers. I can only hope and pray with some guidance that we can find the right channels to save her from this demise sincerely James Sica director United States Naval Amphibious Ship Historical Society.
Thank you

If I could have a piece of her, what I want went away years ago.  I want the Sperry/Univac AN/UYK-7 computer used in Radio for the communications system.

Or one of the 5KW HF Transmitters, but those were also removed, along with the Rotating Log Periodic Antenna (RLPA) mounted on the very top of the Aft Mast.  It looked like a giant TV antenna.  I'd use it for our HF terminations where we got most of our message traffic from.  I'd get a bearing from my buddies in CIC to the Naval Communications Station we were working with and swing the antenna around and point it in that direction.  The shore HEARD us using that antenna.  And if the frequency was right, I'd use one of the transceivers in the receiver mode and use that antenna to receive since the COMMSTA was most likely co-located with its Transmitter Site.

Ahhhhh  memories....... [smile]
