Keith, I'm going to take a stab at this but I believe the LCAC was introduced to the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) in '87

I don't remember any of these cool toys between PRECOMM and 1979?

Based on what I see given these old eyes, I would have to say you are right John.

Here are more shots of well deck operations. From an operation near Camp Pendleton in 1977.

Keith, should we rename this post so shipmates know what is in the thread when they see the title a year from today? These are great pictures. We should select a title from this description.

well deck operations AND near Camp Pendleton in 1977

DONE.

If you are a ship's photographer, you get to go to a lot of interesting places to take pictures, like hanging out of a helicopter's window.

We had an official Navy photographer aboard the helo the day I took those well deck ops photos. The helo was hovering off the aft of the ship and matching the ship's forward speed while the marines did their boat launches are recoveries. Those smaller craft pretty much disappeared under the water for a moment when they jumped into the ship's wake. That must have been an interesting ride!

Rick, I would agree. I think each series of photos should have their own thread.

we had to slow down when the aav's launched because the welldeck doors went up and didn't go down into the water to brake up the wake. the first try the second set of aav's almost hit the first .they didn't have the power to pull away.
